OpenSocial API Released

OpenSocial has finally been released by Google. I wrote about OpenSocial in my post Google’s OpenSocial:It will hit Facebook where it matters the most.

Common APIs mean you have less to learn to build for multiple websites. OpenSocial is currently being developed by Google in conjunction with members of the web community. The ultimate goal is for any social website to be able to implement the APIs and host 3rd party social applications. There are many websites implementing OpenSocial, including Engage.com, Friendster, hi5, Hyves, imeem, LinkedIn, MySpace, Ning, Oracle, orkut, Plaxo, Salesforce.com, Six Apart, Tianji, Viadeo, and XING.

In order for developers to get started immediately, Orkut has opened a limited sandbox that you can use to start building apps using the OpenSocial APIs.

I am embedding the Youtube Video below which explains in more depth the capabilities of OpenSocial.

  3. Thanks to you .. I got to know that Open social has been released :)

We will be writing an app for Muziboo.com soon .. but looks like Orkut Sandbox is available only through invites right now .. so am waiting for one … the good news is that OpenSocial is based on google gadgets .. so you can read up a lot of stuff till you get invites !

  4. Thanks Prateek for the comment. Surely, i am looking forward for the app you intend to build.
Yes, Orkut sandbox is based on invites and i believe you must have given your nomination for invites by now.
    Cheers

  5. Good step forward but Orkut is the only one supporting OpenSocial at the moment … will have to wait and watch.

Have all those names (i see a few biggies) committed to implement OpenSocial already?

  6. Thanks Sangfroid for the comment. Yes, Orkut happens to be in Sandbox stage as of now but the other biggies mentioned are also working on OpenSocial thing. So its a big thing.
Although, we need to wait and watch how things pan out in the future.
    Cheers

  11. Release of OpenSocial APIs and due to everyone talking- “now we can add applications like in Facebook” is actually spreading the words for Facebook. One more thing, have you checked the 10 reasons to sign-up for kickstart.yahoo.com it is also doing the same thing by using terms “wall”, “poke”

I am not an MBA but still wonder what is the marketing strategy of these products…
