Gtalk adds Invisible Mode

Google Operating System blog reports addition of Invisible mode in Gtalk.

The blogpost says

Now you can be logged in to Gmail Chat and see if your contacts are online, but they won’t be able to see you’re online.

However, this feature is available only with new version of Gmail and if you are simultaneously using the desktop or any other flavor of Gtalk, your status change won’t happen.

How to detect Invisible users in Gtalk?

1.) Start a new chat with the intended user. 

2.) Set the chat to off the record so that it doesn’t get logged to the gmail account.

3.) Send a message to the user. If the user is online and invisible, the message will be delivered.

4.) If the user is offline, you will get an error message indicating that the user is offline.

With the above mentioned four steps, you can identify if a user is invisible or is indeed offline on Gtalk. 

I really wish this feature turns up on Gtalk desktop client as well.

    Hi Mariah,
    Thanks for reading the post and commenting. Well, new version of Gmail is in the process of being rolled out and will soon be available to all users. As of now its only available to a select users. Also, another interesting point to note is that this is available only for IE7 and Firefox 2 onwards. So kindly ensure that your browser versions are correct.

    the invisible mode works only in the chat option in your GMAIL, and not GTALK.
    don’t know why they haven’t extended it to gtalk :(

    Gtalk invisible mode is a real hassle. I use gtalk in my iphone where I set the status as invlsible.
    If someone checks my status(including me in my laptop), it says null as the status.

    Not sure if it is a bug

    Invisible mode works in Gmail n Orkut…..either use latest version of Mozilla i.e. Firefox 3 or Internet Explorer 7…to get it work perfectly.

    But now the trick to know if an user is invisible or not ain’t work any more….perhaps fixed by google…..lets try find a new method…

    you can’t go off the record now of the person is invisible! so you have to stay off the record all the time or you can’t understand whether he is invisible or not!

    ohh please I dont know why you claim it as a bug in gmail status … it aint a bug thatz the way the protocol work.

    Hi is it possible somehow to block an email address in Gmail? i know i can create a filter so that the mails go directly to my trash can but i want to block the emails from coming into my account from a particular address. I dont even want them in the thrash can, And also maybe if possible also have gmail send an email to the sender that the message could not be delivered like in Hotmail it gives you that message when your inbox is full and someone sends you an email.

    Is this not possible in Gmail? Because ive been searching and couldnt find anything

    Here is a perl script to find invisible users in gmail. It checks for all users in your contacts. You dont need to send any offlines in this method.

    One can remain invisible to a specific user:

    By blocking anyone for chatting, irrespective of your status, you appear as ‘offline’ to all those users whom you have blocked…
    This isnt exactly as invisible…. cuz you cannot receive chats from blocked users…

    but still, you can avoid chats with them…
