Canon Powershot A470: No frills, entry level digital camera
I recently got a chance to review Canon Powershot A470 camera. This post carries some of my observations of this camera and also the specifications.
Canon Powershot A470 is a compact and easily portable entry level digital camera. Canon’s PowerShot series is known for its user-friendliness and good quality, and the PowerShot A470 upholds that reputation pretty well.
Powershot A470 is a 7.1 megapixel camera with 3.4x Optical Zoom. For those of you who are new to the term ” Optical Zoom” :
Optical zoom lenses actually move you closer to the subject of the photograph without sacrificing quality. The higher the optical zoom rating on a camera, the farther away you can be to take a photograph and still get a clear, close-up image. The concept of optical zoom essentially the same as the zoom on a film (non-digital) camera. Optical zoom is the number you want to pay close attention to–it’s the zoom that will give you the quality results you want.

The camera also has a 2.5inch LCD screen, though surprisingly, it doesn’t have a viewfinder. Another important feature which i found missing in it was Image Stabilization. Image stabilization (IS) is a family of techniques to increase the stability of an image.With still cameras, camera shake is particularly problematic at slow shutter speeds or with long focal length (telephoto) lenses.
Canon Powershot A470 comes with 14 preset scene modes for easy photo clicking. Its zoom operation is also smooth. Powershot A470 is powered by 2 AA size batteries. Though,its body casing is plastic, i found it good on the usability front. I liked the Canon A470’s user interface, and found operation simple and straightforward. Though, did find that a couple of more advanced camera settings, such as contrast and Long Shutter mode, were a little hard to find in the Function menu. However, once accustomed to the camera, finding these options is second nature.
Interestingly, the images shot from A470 were sharp at both wide angle and extreme telephoto ends. Priced at 7000 Indian Rupees, Canon Powershot A470 is a no frills camera for someone starting out in digital photography.

Canon cameras are known to be one of the bests in market. This model from Canon is not an exception. In spite of its cheap price it’s rather qualified. I got one myself and am very pleased with it. I’m a professional photographer. I got tired of dragging my D3,D200 or other large cameras around, and worrying about it getting damaged. I decided to buy a camera just for fun that could fit in my purse and I wouldn’t have a heart attack if it broke. Well I didn’t hold that high of expectations of the camera, but after getting it, I’ve had a lot of fun with it. Not the most amazing pictures come from it (I am used to very high quality pictures), but they are good enough shots of my family. It’s easy to use, really easy to set, FAST, and good low light. You don’t always need the flash. It’s very small, and can fit easily in my purse (that are all quiet small purses actually). This is a perfect camera if you just want some fun shots that are clear, and you want an easy to use fast camera. This is NOT good for “professional” type shots (why do people write reviews of these cameras and get all down on them for not being professional grade cameras? They never claim to be!).
