Automattic has an interesting way of Hiring the Right Candidates
All companies agree to the fact that finding and recruiting the right talent is one of the best things a company can do in order to grow and increase shareholder value. However, its not always that easy. But, Automattic, the company behind Wordpress, has definitely an interesting and impressive way of finding and recruiting the “Right Candidates”.
While checking out some stuff over the internet on a wordpress blog, i figured out that the company infact sends out a Special Custom Response header called X-Hacker which asks the candidate/user to apply for job with Automattic if he/she is looking at the header and is ofcourse interested. It also asks the reader to mention the header details. Check out the image below from Fiddler which contains the Request and Response HTTP headers.

Custom Response Header X-Hacker is sent back by the wordpress server asking the user to apply for a job with Automattic.
If you are thinking how to checkout the HTTP Headers exchanged between the browser and the webserver, follow the below mentioned steps
1.) I recommend downloading Fiddler as it can be configured to run with any browser. By Default it will run with Internet Explorer and Google Chrome or any browser which uses WINInet. If you use Firefox, you can consider downloading Firefox Ad-On Live HTTP Headers.
2.) Open your browser and also open the software you just installed, Fiddler or Live HTTP Header. Ensure that the tool is capturing traffic.
3.) Live HTTP Header should be able to show you the headers exchanged right away. In Fiddler, select the URL and then click on the tab which says “Session Inspector” to check the response headers.

I’m pretty sure that is how Automattics 21st employee was hired. He was looking around and came across the headers and guess what? He ended up getting the job. His name is Warwick Poole I believe.
Hi Vaibhav,
Nice post. The ones I recall are Google’s Math ads. Their ad in MIT review caught my attention too. It may be great to collect some innovative job ads.
