[Wordpress] How do you take care of Spam?
If you have a blog or a website, you already know what Spam can do to you. Though, Akismet has done a very good job when it comes to dealing with Spam, but still at times you do find legitimate comments land up into spam.
The main problem with Askimet is it places all the spam comments in the spam folder for you to check out. Because Askimet is not perfect, you need to check the spam folder to see if any legit comments got caught. This isn’t a problem when you get a few spams per day. However, when you wake up to 200+ comments in the spam folder each day, it can be a real time waster to check through it.
The best way however, to block spam messages from landing up in your blog itself. This can be pretty simple to achieve as most of the spams are usually sent by the same person or the company or the same IP Address for that matter. You have the option of either modifying your .htaccess file to ban the access to your website for such spammers, however, that would mean editing your .htaccess every now and then.
The other interesting way, which you can employ if you use Wordpress is to install a plugin called WP-Ban.
WP-Ban allows you to ban users by IP, IP Range, host name and referer url from visiting your WordPress’s blog. It will display a custom ban message when the banned IP, IP range, host name or referer url trys to visit you blog. You can also exclude certain IPs from being banned. There will be statistics recordered on how many times they attemp to visit your blog. It allows wildcard matching too.
So if you’re getting a bunch of spam comments from the same IPs over and over again, WP-Ban is a great way to lock them out!
Download WP-Ban and ban all the spammers to your website or blog.
