Testing Browser Security with Bcheck
Security is one of my favorite topics and i love to read, write, talk and eat Security. When talking about Security, one must not only take care of the security exploits from an OS or an application perspective, but must also understand the bugs present in a browser which can be exploited.
BCheck is an interesting website which can help you figure out the various Browser Security Bugs which can be exploited on your browser.
Browsers, just like any other programs have bugs. Most bugs are just annoying. But some bugs can be exploited to violate the security of your computer. You browser receives and processes data sent to it by web sites. A web site can send your browser some data that exploits a bug in a browser and violates your computer’s security.
Its important to note that BCheck test will try to crash your browser. Close all other browser windows before starting and bookmark this page. If your browser crashes during the test, restart it and return to this page. It will show which vulnerability crashed your browser and offer you to continue the test or view the results.
The test requires persistent cookies to be enabled. The cookie is used to restore your session after browser crash.
If you are interested in knowing about the complete list of security tests done with BCheck, the list is available here.
In order to run Browser check, follow the steps below
1.) Point your browser to BCheck.
2.) Select radio “Only test for bugs specific to my type of browser”.
3.) Press “Start the test”.
4.) Once the test finishes, if everything is alright, you will get a confirmation. Else, if the browser crashes, reload and restore the session and open the site again. BCheck will show you the test result and also an explanation of wht went wrong.
As a general rule, always have a good anti-virus software, a good anti-spyware software and a good firewall installed on your computer.
