[How-To] Restore Deactivated CD or DVD Drive
Today morning i noticed a strange behavior on my PC when i inserted a DVD Disk of the latest game called Gears of War 2. The DVD drive didn’ load at all and was not even shown in the My Computer or explorer menu. A further examination of Device Manager revealed that the device was reporting “Error Code 19” and an error in the registry. This article describes step by step instructions for restoring your deactivated CD or DVD Drive.
This process requires modifying registry values and therefore taking a system backup before making changes to the registry is adviced.
1.) Press Start –> Run.
2.) Type Regedit at run. Typing regedit will open up the registry editor for you.
3.) Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE. Expand the tree by clicking on the + sign.
4.) Next, navigate to System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class.
5.) Locate the key named {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} .
6.) In the right side of the Window, delete both values ‘UpperFilters‘ and ‘LowerFilters‘. In some installations you might have only one of these values ( mostly LowerFilters). Press Del key to delete the value. Confirm the query that pops up when you try deleting the value.
7.) Restart your system.
Once you have followed the above 7 steps and restarted the PC again, the drive should now be available again.

I found your blog from google and read your posts. It’s fun and I just add your blog to my Google Reader.
I have tried this and my DVD is still not recognized. I have looked around for a different way, but everyone has this same fix. Anything else I could do? The problem arose after I uninstalled a trial version of Alcohol 120. Thanks
