[How-To] Use Multi-Touch feature of Windows 7 Beta

If you are already in possession of Windows 7 Beta copy which was available for fresh downloads till 10th Feb 2009 and if you have a multi touch enabled monitor, you might want to make sure you test the Windows 7 Beta for its Multi-touch feature as well.

Today – there are a few PCs with Multi touch feature in the market to choose from

Once you have one of these PC’s, you might want to ensure that the PC’s have updated Multi-touch drivers installed for Windows 7 Beta.
  • For HP TouchSmart All-in-One PCs: The driver is available from Windows Update. After you have installed the Window 7 Beta, open Windows Update from the Start menu. You might have to click the “Check for Updates” link on your left so it will find the driver, it is Optional right now so you’ll have to select it before it will install.
  •

  • For the Dell Latitude XT and HP TouchSmart tx2 Tablet PCs: the drivers are available now on N-Trig’s website. N-Trig is the company that makes the digitizer in these PCs (you should read the release notes, there are some limitations, like no pen support you should be aware of and how to switch between Windows Vista and Windows 7). Please also note these are beta drivers and are not supported by Dell or HP.
  • If you are having trouble with using Multi-touch with the default controls, you can even tweak Windows to display everything larger. Microsoft has certainly improved a lot of such things with Windows 7 Beta.

    1.) Go to Start Menu.

    2.) Open Display Control Panel.

3.) Choose either the medium or large size depending on your comfort.

Now everything that you see on the display will be displayed in a size larger than the original, making it easier to use your fingers for the best touch feature experience.

You might want to test your multi-touch monitor by trying out the Paint application. Try finger painting and you can easily make out how many fingers your Monitor supports.

I am sure with the release of Windows 7 Operating system, touch screen monitors are going to be the next commodity on the street and Usability experts might just start looking at every piece of UI design with a different angle, of touch.
