[Universal Charger] Universal Mobile Chargers to be a reality by 2012.

Universal mobile chargers will be a reality by 2012. As per the agreement between 17 mobile phone manufacturers to provide single, power-efficient charger for new cellphones by January 2012. This move will allow for the reduction of 600-960 million chargers each year, thereby reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 13.6 to 21.8 million tonnes annually.

The chargers will employ micro-usb technology as the interface for charging and will also be a 4-star or higher efficiency rating.

The companies who have signed up to the universal charger commitment are the 3 Group, AT&T, KTF, LG, mobilkom austria, Motorola, Nokia, Orange, Qualcomm, Samsung, Sony Ericsson, Telecom Italia, Telefónica, Telenor, Telstra, T-Mobile and Vodafone. Noticeably missing from the agreement are names like Apple, Palm, RIM and HTC.
