Yahoo decides to close Geocities later this year

In a bid to cut costs and eliminate duplication, Yahoo said it will shut down the once highly popular GeoCities.

Yahoo has decided to shut down GeoCities in a bid to cut costs. Earlier during the week, Yahoo had announced that it will be laying off another 700 employees as part of the cost cutting exercise. 

Yahoo Geocities website currently displays this information 

After careful consideration, we have decided to close GeoCities later this year. We’ll share more details this summer. For now, please sign in or visit the help center for more information.

Interestingly, just next to the closure notice, Yahoo is advertising Yahoo Web Hosting solution.

Yahoo GeoCities was definitely an early attempt to allow internet users have their pages and space on the internet.
