Google Docs adds .docx and .xlsx support

Earlier, whenever a user tried opening a .docx or a .xlsx file with Google docs, the system used to complain and inform the user that the format is now supported. Well, now that is history. Google docs has now added support for .docx and .xlsx file formats.

The latest .docx and .xlsx versions of the popular .doc and .xls formats offer smaller file size and also addition of Open XML. “x” variants are the default format in the latest versons of Microsoft Exce and Word 2007.

The excerpt from Google Docs blog reads

To import a .docx or .xlsx file, simply click the “Upload” button in your Docs List menu, select your file, and voila! We’ll upload and convert your document for use in Google Docs. This is a another great benefit of Google Docs – you don’t have to worry about what format the file is in. Just upload it and we’ll figure it out for you.

I hope we will also see support for .pptx soon.
