Gmail drops “on behalf of” for mails sent from another address

Earlier, whenever you sent an email from the alternate other addresses using Gmail, it used to add “on behalf of” when sending that email. Now, Gmail provides an option to configure this feature in a way that you can get the “on behalf of” removed from the mail sender’s detail when you send an email from Gmail using an alternate email address.

Gmail’s reasoning for adding “on behalf of ” is,

Since these messages are sent by Gmail’s servers but “from” a non-Gmail address, we have to include your original Gmail username in the “Sender” field of the message header to comply with mail delivery protocols and help prevent your mail from being marked as spam.

Most email programs just display the “From” address and not the “Sender” field, but some (including versions of Microsoft Outlook) show these messages as coming “From username@gmail.com On Behalf Of customaddress@mydomain.com” which really annoyed people.

However, from now on, you can get rid of the “On Behalf Of” when sending mails from alternate address using Gmail. In order to switch to this new method, go to the Accounts page under Settings, and click “edit info” from the “Send mail as” section. Then choose the option to “Use your other email provider’s SMTP servers.”

In case if you use a forwarding alias rather than an actual mailbox or if your alternate email provider doesn’t support authenticate SMTP, you can continue using the old method.

  1. It doesn’t work at all for GoogleApps domains…your gmail account name still shows as the ’sender’.

    :/

  2. Not quite. If you send from another Gmail address, there are still different Sender: and From: fields, and there’s no option in account settings for “Send through gmail.com SMTP servers”.
