[Security] 10 FTP Clients Malwares Bet Their Money On

Do you use FTP program to upload stuff to your websites? If yes, you need to be aware of the fact that your FTP Program and the way you use it, can decide if your website will be hacked or not.

As a security guideline, its recommended that you don’t store passwords in your FTP programs. Usually the user id and password combination are stored in a configuration file and this is from where the malwares are able to access it and use it.

Below is a list of 10 FTP Clients, Malwares are betting upon to get your userid and password.

1. CoffeeCup Direct FTP
2. TransSoft FTP Control 4
3. Core FTP
4. GlobalScape CuteFTP
5. Far Manager (with FTP plugin)
6. FileZilla
7. FlashFXP
8. SmartFTP
9. FTP Navigator
10. Total Commander

Well, its totally possible that you use one of these FTP clients, if yes, don’t panic.Below are some of the tips you might want to follow to ensure that you are safe

1.) DO NOT store your user id and password combination in the FTP program. It does save sometime by storing the userid and password combination, but believe me the time you save will be far less than what you might end up spending if your site gets hacked.

2.) Ensure you have a good anti-virus software installed on your computer. Also, ensure that the software uses latest virus definitions.

3.) Have a good anti-spyware software installed on your computer.

4.) Use SFTP or FTPS. You might want to check with your hosting provider if these protocols are supported or not. Benefit of using SFTP or FTPS is that the traffic flowing out of your computer is encrypted and therefore any trojan sniffing for your FTP userid and password combination won’t get any useful information.

5.) Test your website for infection by navigating to Unmask Parasites. Unmask Parasites, navigates through the links of your website and checks for any malware infection.

Hope the above tips and tricks help you stay safe from the prying eyes of malware planters.
