Microsoft’s free antivirus software Microsoft Security Essentials has left beta as expected. In one of my earlier post, i had mentioned about Free and Best Anti-virus softwares and believe me, Microsoft Security Essentials is no less. Microsoft Security Essentials provides real-time protection for your home PC that guards against viruses, spyware, and other malicious software.

Microsoft Security Essentials is a free* download from Microsoft that is simple to install, easy to use, and always kept up to date so you can be assured your PC is protected by the latest technology. It’s easy to tell if your PC is secure — when you’re green, you’re good. It’s that simple.

Microsoft Security Essentials runs quietly and efficiently in the background so that you are free to use your Windows-based PC the way you want—without interruptions or long computer wait times.

Why Microsoft Security Essentials Is Important?

Well, the story starts from the point when you buy a computer. Usually, personal computers and laptop come pre-loaded with security softwares from companies like McAfee or Norton etc ( which depends on the partnership and agreements with the manufacturer and the anti-virus company). Usually these products expire after a certain set of time and requires paid renewal. This is where most or the users, don’t pay attention. The general belief held by the non-technical users is ” I have an anti-virus or anti-spyware software running and therefore i am safe”. Well, NO. You aren’t safe if the definitions of the virus product or any security product are not updated. Definitions are files that act like an ever-growing encyclopedia of potential software threats.

With the launch of Microsoft Security Essentials, Microsoft is trying to fill in this vital gap. As Microsoft Security Essentials is free, and it updates regularly on its own, once you have downloaded and installed it, the above statement (” I have an anti-virus or anti-spyware software running and therefore i am safe”) will stand good.

When it comes to software update, the product will be updated using Windows Update. The signatures are updated three times each day. But as i mentioned earlier, once you have installed the software, you do not need to do anything. The catch is, you need to be running genuine Windows to install Microsoft Security Essentials and you must have an active internet connection for the software to update.

I have been using Microsoft Security Essentials since the beta launch and i am pretty impressed with the performance of the software. Unlike other security softwares, Microsoft Security Essentials, doesn’t slow down your PC, its very small and lightweight.

In my opinion, Microsoft Security Essentials is definitely a great offering by Microsoft. I guess this is the first time when Microsoft has worked towards client security and they have certainly done a great deal of work here. It will be amazing if Microsoft makes Microsoft Security Essentials a part of Windows, but that is upto Microsoft to decide.My verdict is pretty simple and straight, the software comes free, is very lightweight and easy to use, doesn’t slow down your PC and gives you real-time protection against viruses and malwares. In my opinion, if you do not own a paid anti-virus software, Microsoft Security Essentials is a must-have.

For now, if you own a computer and do not have any anti-virus software installed on it, do yourself a favor by downloading and installing Microsoft Security Essentials.
