[India] Airtel Brings Twitter SMS
Airtel has entered into a deal with Twitter which will allow twitter users on Airtel network to send updates to their timeline, reply back and even send direct messages through SMS. The service today in India works only on a web or a WAP site or through apps (basically needing the consumer to be internet ready).
There is exclusivity in this deal for 4 weeks, in which only Airtel consumers will be able to use the service on SMS across the nation. This period of exclusivity is something that Airtel wantx to take advantage of and make sure that Brand Airtel can own the property Twitter in consumer mind space.

In case if you are not on Airtel, you might be able to use this service ( provided your mobile operator too offers such a plan) after 4 weeks. For now, if you are on Airtel, here is how you can get started.
If you are a new twitter user, i.e., do not have a twitter account, you can signup for the service by sending an SMS message with text “Signup” (without quotes) to 53000. If you already have a twitter account, you need to send “Start” (without quotes) to 53000. You can also get started for free by linking your mobile phone through the Twitter Devices page on twitter and linking your cellphone number with your Twitter ID online.
Once you have got your cellphone linked to your Twitter ID, you will get updates from Twitter for those user’s whom you are following and have device updates turned on. Whenever you reply back or post any message back to Twitter, you will be required to send the message in proper format to 53000. Airtel will charge Rs1 for every update posted to Twitter.
You can find general keywords for device notifications here.
Twitter SMS is not new to twitter users, the service was earlier available as a regular offering, however, owing to high cost, twitter disabled this feature. Its interesting to see Twitter entering into such a deal with mobile providers.
