Monitor Applications Connecting to Internet Using NetLimiter 2 Monitor

As a computer user, from security perspective, its important for you to keep an eye on what all processes and applications access internet to send and receive data. Often trojans, spywares and viruses are programmed to send important and sensitive data from your computer to a remote computer. It therefore becomes important for one to monitor what all applications are connecting to and sending / receiving data from the internet. Once you have identified the applications which are connecting with the internet, you can take relevant action if you find a suspicious process connected to the internet.

Netlimiter 2 Monitor is a free to download and use software which displays records of all the aplications sending and receiving data over the internet. It also provides information about the connection and transfer rates.

NetLimiter 2 Monitor also has a history feature which allows you to get statistical data like amount of transferred data for selected tool during selected time period.

The other way out is by typing the command “netstat -o” ( without quotes) at the command prompt. The -o option of netstat displays the owning process ID associated with each connection. Once you have identified the suspicious connection ID, you can kill the process using task manager.

As a best practice, i would recommend that you must have a good anti-virus software ( you can also try freely available anti-virus from Microsoft called Security Essentials), anti-spyware and a good firewall installed on your computer.

  1. Good article. We’ve bueen using the app for a while now, but just curious – Does the app need to be open in order for it to be recording?

    Is an emailed response possible?

  2. Yes the app needs to be open to be able to track the traffic flowing through the computer.
