[India] Starting Jan 1, Cellphone Numbers could have another 9
If the latest proposal by DoT is accepted, cellphone numbers in India might migrate to a 11 number series as soon as January 1 2010. India already has crossed 500 million subscribers and the subscriber base is expected to cross 1 billion by 2014.
Cellphone numbers starting from 8 are already being issued by few providers in different circles.
The latest proposed plan by DoT calls for an extra 9 to prefix the existing 10-digit number.
“The National Numbering Plan 2003 is amended for migration to 11-digit numbering plan for mobile services by prefixing digit ‘9’ in existing 2-digit PLMN Access Code. It is requested to make the necessary arrangements to implement the migration from existing 10-digit to 11-digit numbering plan w.e.f 00:00 hrs 1st January 2010,” reads the DoT note.
Well, while India, given the size of the mobile subscribers will have to migrate to the 11 digit plan, its scary to think about the fact that the numbers saved in the address book are going to go bust as soon as the numbers are migrated to 11 digit plan. Also, imagining about the pain associated with modifying the numbers in places like Bank and other financial accounts is also giving me a headache. Hopefully the planners are giving this a thought.
