[India] MTNL introduces per second billing (Telecom War)
Telecom war seems to be getting thick every passing day. Goverment run MTNL has now announced per second billing for its 2G as well as 3G customers in Delhi and Mumbai.
Under the new offering calls made by MTNL customers to another MTNL customer will be charged at “half paisa” per second whereas calls made to subscribers of other networks will be charged at “one paisa” per second. MTNL is also offering video calls made using its 3G network for 1 paisa per second.
In MTNL Delhi, a customer seeking new prepaid plan can avail this tariff plan by purchasing a SIM kit of MRP Rs.100/- and a Trump Activation/ First Recharge coupon of Rs.49/-. Thus in just Rs.149/- a new customer can avail Pay-per-second tariff plan valid for Lifetime along with Free talk value of Rs.12/-. In MTNL Mumbai, customers can purchase any SIM kit & use Trump pay-per-second coupon of Rs 45/- for availing per second billing.
An existing MTNL prepaid (Trump) customer willing to shift to pay-per-second plan has to recharge his connection with a Trump Pay-per-second plan voucher of Rs.45/- through which he will get the pay-per-second plan tariff along with talk-time of Rs.15/-. The tariff validity will be 365 days for such conversion.
MTNL has also introduced pay-per-second plan for Postpaid (Dolphin) subscribers which can be availed by opting for the postpaid pay-per-second plan. This postpaid pay-per-second plan will be available for a monthly fixed charge of Rs.149/- only. This postpaid plan will have a one time activation charge of Rs.500/- plus tax for new subscribers.
Existing postpaid (Dolphin) customers can get their plan converted to pay-per-second plan by giving a request to the nearest MTNL Sanchaar Haat/ Quick Customer Service Center or through the call centre 1503. Existing 2G customers can convert to 2G pay-per-second plan, and 3G customers can convert to 3G pay-per-second plan. 2G customers wishing to convert to 3G pay-per-second plan may do so by first converting to 3G plan by paying nominal conversion charges.
Along with this MTNL has also introduced lowest-in-the-industry Data usage rate of just 1 paisa/10KB, applicable to both GPRS & 3G services.
Its interesting to see how the tariff war which was started by Tata Docomo has now taken all the major cellphone networks in India into its grip. For now, this is certainly music to ears for MTNL’s 4.4 million mobile customers which includes about 1.65 lac 3G customers.
On another news, thanks to its mobile surge, India might soon migrate to a 11 digit mobile number. You can read about that story in my earlier article [India] Starting Jan 1, Cellphone Numbers could have another 9
