5 Features I will be Looking Out for in Laptops of 2010

2010 in my opinion is going to be an exciting year for Tech and in the upcoming posts, i will be focusing on what I will be looking out for in various Technology related areas in 2010.

In this article, i am putting up some of the features / technological advancements in the field of Laptops, which i believe will play a major role in 2010. So if you are planning to buy a Laptop in 2010, you might just want to go through these features. In future, i will also update this article, if and when the technological advancements come true.

a.) Multi-Touch Support

Windows 7 is already out and i believe in 2010, it will most probably be the default OS for most of the Laptops manufactured in 2010. As already known, Windows 7 offers native multi-touch support and therefore, it will certainly be a roadmap item for laptop manufacturers in 2010 to enable and manufacture more of multi-touch laptops.

Using Multi-touch laptops you will be easily able to zoom your pictures by just touching them like you currently do with the iPhone or the iPod Touch and other touch enabled devices.

b.) Solid State Drives

A solid-state drive (SSD) is a data storage device that uses solid-state memory to store persistent data. An SSD emulates a hard disk drive interface, thus easily replacing it in most applications.

SSD has a faster start-up because no spin-up is required. It also offers faster random access as there is no read/write head.

As of today, Solid-state drives outrun standard hard drives in some laptops and on some applications.

SSD is already making it to the laptops but as of now there does exist a price challenge as SSD is still costly on a per GB basis. The new Apple Macbook Air laptop is already being sold with a choice of traditional HDD or new SSD harddrive.

Another interesting point to note with SSD implementation is the impact it will have on the battery life of the laptop. As SSD’s consume very less power, they will also have a positive effect on the battery consumption and we will be able to see higher battery life in 2010.

c.) 3G  or HSDPA Wireless Broadband

In my opinion, in-built 3G or HSDPA Wireless Broadband interface card should start getting a place in the laptops of 2010. Most major laptop manufacturers like Dell are already including them with new laptops.

Growth of 3G / HSDPA wireless broadband will help users increase their productivity because of being able to work even while on the move.

d.) USB 3.0

USB 2.0 has been with us for sometime now, but it limits the transfer rates to 480mbps, with the adoption of USB 3.0, this speed will go up to 4.8Gbps. Also, interesting to note is the fact that devices which implement USB 3.0, the faster USB will be able to save more power, giving better battery life. Saving of the battery will come from the fact that devices implementing USB 3.0 can send and receive data simultaneously.

e.) LED Powered Display

Most of the laptops of today empower LCD backlit display which draws more power and also die out after a certain period of time. Laptops of 2010 will possibly have LED powered displays which will lead to less power consumption ( giving a boost to battery life) and will also have a higher display life as LED’s don’t burn out.

Not to mention, LED’s also offer better contrast and brightness levels giving better visuals as compared to LCD displays.

While the above 5 are my primary guesses for 2010, i also believe Blu-ray as a media delivery mode will grow, this must lead to an inclusion of Blu-Ray combo drive in the laptop and also hopefully a HDMI output port, so that you can watch those Blu-ray movies on a high def display like a LED or a LCD HDTV.

What do you think about the laptops of 2010? Any features you believe which are going to make it big in 2010? If yes, do mention that in the comment and i will update the post with a backlink to your blog/website.
