If you too are stuck in a situation where you downloaded a video from one of your favorite video sharing website or grabbed it from Hulu but not able to hear any sound, you are suffering from missing codecs.

A codec is basically either a hardware or a software piece which is capable of encoding / or decoding a digital data stream. In simple terms, once you download the videos from the video sharing website ( like Hulu or Youtube) and try playing it on your computer, your computer needs to understand that stream of data to be able to deliver the audio and video. If for some reason, it is not able to understand the format ( which is called decoding the format), it doesnt play the particular module ( in your case voice). So if its not able to decode the format for audio, you have a missing audio problem. If for some reason, its not able to decode the video, you have a missing video problem.

Whenever i get any email question about such missing audio problem, the codec i recommend is the AC3Filter codec. AC3Filter is a high quality free audio decoder and processor filter. It allows media players to playback movies with AC3 and DTS audio tracks ( thereby fixing the missing audio problem). It can additionally process any audio track, much of processing options allows to adjust the sound in almost any way. It is possible to upmix any audio source to 6 channels. Filter can do multi-channel and digital (SPDIF) output. It can encode any audio source to AC3 on-the-fly and send it over SPDIF to the receiver.

1.) Once you have the AC3Filter, you can watch movies with AC3 and DTS audio tracks.

2.) With AC3Filter, you can also listen to multi-channel (AC3/DTS) Audio CD’s.

3.) AC3Filter allows for playback of WAV files with AC3/DTS content which is ripped from multi-channel AudioCD without any conversion of these files. Without a proper codec, these files have to be converted to another format.
