So you downloaded your favorite torrents and also have the subtitles downloaded for the particular movie / tv show (Read: 5 Best Websites to look for Movie Subtitles). However, the next challenge you face is, how do you combine the both and make Windows Media Player show the subtitles when playing the video. This is pretty useful when you are watching a foreign language movie or tv-show.
This article carries step by step instructions for showing Subtitles of Movie / Tv Shows (downloaded from Torrent sites, primarily in xVid format) when playing them in Windows Media Player. The steps mentioned below also work with Media Player Classic and VLC Media Player
1.) You need to first download and install DirectVobSub. You can download DirectVobSub from here.
2.) Download the subtitle file for the movie / tv show. You can use one of the websites listed here for the same.
3.) The next step is to copy the subtitle file in the same directory as the movie file. Also, you must rename the file to a .sub or .srt extension. For example, if you have your movie in D:\movies\Titanic.avi , then you need to copy the subtitle file (subtitle filename must be same as movie filename. Rename if required) to D:\movies\Titanic.sub
4.) Launch Windows Media Player, click the Play menu, point to Lyrics, Captions, and Subtitles, and then click On if Available.
5.) Once you are done with the above steps, play the movie file in Windows Media Player.
Note: If captions and subtitles appear even though you have not turned them on in the Player, verify that the sounds accessibility feature of Windows is not turned on.
